"The End of White America?" By Hua Hsu explains how white America is becoming the minority due to a change in how immigrants and minorities no longer needs to strive to be like “white America”. In a 2008 U.S Census those groups that were considered minorities will no longer be considered so by the year 2042." Immigrants and minorities no longer have to prove their whiteness to gain success. Hsu goes on to describe how regardless of their socioeconomic status this is signaling a fear in white America because they feel "culturally broken.”
Minorities and immigrants no longer feel the need to assimilate with the “white American” identity in present day America. This is because you no longer have to prove your whiteness or assimilate into their identity to become successful. This is a completely different perspective from earlier generations of minorities and immigrants. During those time minorities and immigrants aspired and felt it was a necessity to blend in with “white America.” They did this by learning their language and going to the same schools as them.
Hsu quotes sociologist Matt Wray, who is describing how the racial identity crisis is affecting his white students: “They don’t care about socioeconomics; they care about culture. And to be white is to be culturally broke.” What he means is white America does not care about their social status or monetary means. The distinction between socioeconomics and culture is important because it helps to show that having a high place in society due to you money and social status does not necessarily show who you are or how you came to be. However, culture does, your culture influences who you are not your money. You can be culturally broke by not knowing who you are, “white America” is trying to figure out who they are.
